A plain canvas tote is useful. Add one simple stitched detail, and it can become something personal. You don't need elaborate tools to start. A needle, suitable thread, a simple motif and a little patience are enough to practise.
Start with a tiny motif
Choose a small flower, star or initial. Draw the design on paper first, then mark it lightly on the bag with a fabric marker that can be removed according to its instructions.
Choose the right materials
Use a sturdy cotton canvas tote, embroidery thread suitable for the fabric and a suitable hand needle. A small embroidery hoop can help keep stitches even. Handle needles safely and store them away from children.
Learn three useful stitches
Running stitch: short, regular stitches for outlines. Backstitch: continuous lines that work well for letters. Satin stitch: closely placed stitches that fill a small shape. Practise on scrap fabric before stitching directly onto your bag.
Plan your placement
Try the corner of a bag or a spot beside the strap. Avoid working through structural seams or pockets by mistake.
Finish carefully
Secure loose ends on the inside. Follow the fabric and embroidery thread care guidance before cleaning the tote. If it's a gift, include a small handwritten note about your design.
Give the afternoon some space
The point isn't perfection. It's making something at your own pace. Folkpause is currently developing an approachable DIY tote kit designed around that idea. The kit is not available to order yet.
