Some afternoons are better spent doing something with your hands than scrolling through someone else's day. You don't need to buy much to try these five simple, screen-free activities.
1. Embroider a tiny design
Practise running stitch or backstitch on scrap fabric. A flower, initial or single wavy line is enough for a satisfying first project.
2. Add a detail to a tote
Take an existing cotton canvas tote and decorate one corner with a small embroidered motif. Choose a design you can finish without rushing.
3. Make a botanical bookmark
Arrange fully dried pressed flowers or paper cut-outs on card, using only materials you can collect safely and legally. Keep it simple and sturdy.
4. Sketch what you can see
Bring a pocket sketchbook to the park or a café. Draw a window, a plant or the outline of a building. The goal is noticing, not perfection.
5. Send a handmade postcard
Decorate a card with a small drawing or collage, then write something thoughtful to a friend.
Make time to make
Some things are worth making even if nobody sees them online. Folkpause is developing creative kits for that kind of time, starting with an easygoing DIY canvas tote project. It is still in testing and is not yet for sale.
